AMS-IX (Amsterdam Internet Exchange) and TESPOK decided by mutual agreement to close the East project Africa Exchange. Since 2013, the two parties worked together to implement and support the creation of an Internet exchange point in Mombasa, Kenya to the SEACOM Cable landing station. However, since the exchange point came in mid-2014 it was difficult to get the parties to participate in the exchange.
To date, there have been only four parts which are connected to the platform, with only an international party namely Google and three parties based in Kenya. This led to the decision to close the Exchange Point East Africa from 1 June
This is not to say that the development of the Internet infrastructure in East Africa has reached an impasse. There is currently a project supported by the AU to create East Africa exchange point supported by seven countries. AMS-IX believes this is best for the African market, especially since it will be owned and driven entirely by the parties on the African base for the community to demonstrate that it is willing and able to take the next steps in the development of its own independent Internet infrastructure.
AMS-IX will be able to reuse the equipment, which was deployed to Kenya for other purposes, to ensure that there is no loss of investment.
AMS-IX will continue to support the development of Internet infrastructure in Africa through initiatives such as African Peering and Interconnection Forum (AfPIF) , share their knowledge and the experience, and provision of equipment to develop exchanges on the Internet.
