The Fibre Channel Industry Association (FCIA) announced Gen 6 Fibre Channel. In 32GFC, Gen 6 Fibre Channel doubles the data rate of the Fibre Channel 16GFC current standard. Gen 6 also provides an option to quadruple to 32 GFC 128GFC flow.
Gen 6 Fibre Channel is the next Fibre Channel generation designed to meet performance, reliability and scalability requirements for hyper-scale virtualization, SSD storage technology, and new architectures for data centers. Solutions should be widely available in 2016.
Gen 6 16GFC doubles the data rate of 3.0 megabits per second (Mbps) to 32GFC, enabling 6,400 MBps full-duplex speeds . Gen 6 also provides an option to quadruple to 32 GFC 128GFC flow, thus achieving full-duplex 25,0 MBps speeds on the international base and back-compatibility Fibre Channel.
In addition to faster speeds, the main characteristics of Gen 6 Fibre Channel include:
- Forward Error Correction (FEC) - Improves reliability of connections through automatic detection and bit error recovery that occur in high speed networks. FEC allows to minimize or avoid dataflow errors that can lead to application performance degradation or outages
- Energy efficiency -. Reduced power consumption is achieved by allowing optical connectors Fibre Channel to operate in stand-by mode (or "nap") several times per second
- backward compatibility -. 128GFC and 32GFC Fibre Channel supports complete and total backward compatibility with 8GFC and 16GFC networks. Protect the full investment, Gen 6 automatically sets the fastest speed supported between two network points, and requiring zero user intervention.
"Continued innovation for the Fibre Channel standard is designed to expand its position in storage networking solution the most reliable and robust in the industry, which is used for most business critical applications today, "said Skip Jones, FCIA President . "Companies and web hosting and data center service providers can expect new innovations to the community of computing providers, network and storage that will develop next-generation solutions in 2016 based on the standard Gen 6 in order to take advantage of its advanced feature set.
